Across Europe, many people want to remain independent, active, and socially connected as they age, while keeping living costs predictable. The European Active Living Town Initiative explores a new model: walkable, age-friendly, active-adult communities built around health-span, community life, and affordability protections, developed in partnership with municipalities, healthcare networks, and sustainability-focused partners.

An age-friendly active adult community combines accessible, inclusive design (“age-friendly”) with lifestyle-oriented engaged living (“active adult”).

• Walkable, shaded neighborhoods with a vibrant town center and “third places” for everyday community life

• Active lifestyle amenities (clubs, learning, wellness, recreation, volunteering)

• A practical healthcare model: on-site primary care + urgent care + diagnostics + rehab, paired with nearby hospital networks

• Climate comfort by design: passive cooling first, then solar-supported cooling and storage where needed

• Affordability protections to reduce speculation and short-term rental pressure over time
